Pressure compression membranes – Sealed enclosures, free breathing
DAM-AD pressure compression membranes for electronics & sensors
Sealed enclosures containing sensitive electronics or sensors are constantly exposed to changing environmental conditions during operation—temperature fluctuations, humidity, dust, or oil. To ensure that an enclosure remains sealed yet can still “breathe,” reliable pressure equalization is required. This is exactly where our DAM-AD series pressure compression membranes come into play.
Why does a housing need to be able to “breathe” in the first place?
A tightly sealed enclosure heats up during operation—for example, due to sunlight, waste heat from the electronics, or hot ambient air—and then cools down again, such as at night or when the system is shut down. The trapped air expands and then contracts. If this pressure difference cannot be equalized, positive or negative pressure develops inside the enclosure relative to the surrounding environment.
This has several undesirable consequences: Seals and housing seams are subjected to constant stress and can develop leaks over time; as the housing cools, a vacuum forms that literally “sucks” water, dust, or moisture into the housing; and the incoming moist air condenses inside—causing condensation to form on the electronics. This is exactly what needs to be prevented.
The solution: controlled pressure equalization instead of uncontrolled leakage
A pressure compression membrane solves this problem by providing the housing with a defined “breathing path”: It allows air to pass continuously in both directions, so that internal and external pressures can always equalize—without placing any strain on seals or the housing. At the same time, the PTFE diaphragm reliably keeps water, oil, dust, and dirt out. This keeps the housing sealed, prevents condensation and pressure buildup, and provides lasting protection for the electronics inside—which reduces critical failures and noticeably extends the service life of the components.
The advantages of our DAM-AD membranes at a glance
- Continuous pressure equalization under both negative and positive pressure
- Water- and oil-repellent (hydrophobic & oleophobic), dirt-resistant and environmentally resistant
- High air flow rate combined with high water inlet pressure (> 1 bar)
- Operating temperature range from –37 °C to +121 °C (up to +177 °C for short periods)
- 100% PTFE, self-adhesive, and coated on one side
- Suitable for pick-and-place automated manufacturing, but also easy to apply by hand
- RoHS- and REACH-compliant, PFOA-free
- IP67, Class 8 oil resistance, long service life
- Very cost-effective
Available in 4 sizes with outer diameters ranging from 6.7 mm to 17 mm (item numbers DAM-AD7, DAM-AD10, DAM-AD12, DAM-AD17)—suitable for virtually any application.
Applications
Our membranes prove their worth wherever sensors and electronics need to be reliably protected:
- Protection of sensors and electronic assemblies
- Process engineering
- Automotive industry
- Equipment manufacturing
The acrylate adhesive bonds reliably to all LSE plastics as well as to metal surfaces such as aluminum—provided the surface is clean and free of deposits or release agents.
